Folsom Street Fair 2008

I wrote the following as a response to a guy on the Fetish Community Portal who seems very nervous to attend Folsom Street Fair. After I wrote this and read it, I thought… Wow… how far I’ve come. And I don’t mean the headboard!

Thought I’d share.

The last time I went to Folsom was nearly 12 years ago. In comparison to IML/MAL/MIR, I was *DEEPLY* disappointed. When I discussed my feelings about the event with others afterward, I was told by many people that 1996 was about the time that the fair became less about gay men into Fetish and BDSM…. and more of a Gawking fest of Heterosexuals with Baby Strollers who came down to check out the freaks. I have been told repeatedly that if I want to be around “my kind”… to SKIP Folsom… go to IML/MAL/MIR.

Here’s the kicker, at least for me personally. I’m also going this year to help out friends at Mr S and do Demos at the Fair. I’m going because I don’t mind the Gawkers. I don’t mind the Goth kids. Or Trannies in the Frankenstein boots. Let’s face it. We’re all freaks in one way or another. There are not many opportunities/events for us to express our kinky sides in public, wearing our favorite fetish gear and doing bondage & SM demos. I also find it very important to be friendly and discuss your interests with the curious folks. We all started somewhere. For me, it was Folsom Street Fair 1996…. and it will be for others this year too.

So, my advice to first timers (of ANY kink event) is don’t make out the event to be anything more than what it really is. A big street festival with Fun Freakshows at almost every corner. Have Zero Expectations. Dress up, have a beer, be friendly…. MEET PEOPLE.

Life is what you make it.
