Thank you for the distraction–from the heat, the chatter,
the latent boredom, the glass half empty, the catastrophe of my personality.

Thank you for the head, the mouths wrapped around me
like God and country depended on it.

Thank you for the drinks and showing me your places,
the eager pride of a well-made home built by one
with fingers crossed for two.

I will remember it all through the cooling days, when inclined
to consider the man I should be and be with by now.
The man already met time and time again, but whose dedication
to a certain freedom has left this fate
–undetermined.
