Go to 12 Leather Bars in Gear in 2012

Editor’s note: We’re HUGE fanatics about getting people out of the house and in to their gear. There’s a lot of movement out there to re-claim our kinky gear spaces and the men from BLUF (Breeches and Leather Uniform Fanclub) are at the very forefront of that movement. Check out this post from the BLUF webmaster Nigel Whitfield. More info on the BLUF website.

There’s even a FACEBOOK PAGE.

One of the most important things that BLUF does every year is to organise meetings around the world; these are arranged by volunteers, and take place in the UK, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, the United States, and many other countries.

At many of these, attendance is excellent – at The Backstreet in London, for example, we’ll regularly see the bar filled almost to capacity, and the same is true at many other events, including of course those organised by other groups around the world, like Folsom Europe.

One of the things that many people often say is that they wish the bars were so busy more often; there are plenty of people that, for instance, we’ll only see at The Backstreet the four or five times a year that there’s a BLUF party.

A decade ago, that wasn’t the case – there would be a good turnout most weekends, and plenty of people making the effort to get out in their gear. Now, of course, plenty of people stay at home, thanks to smoking bans, the cost of drinking in bars, and the ease of making contact online. Just one more click, it sometimes feels, and we’ll find Mr Right, or Mr Right Now.

Today, lots of people say that they’d make the effort, but they don’t want to be the only ones in a bar in full leather; and, to an extent, that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more of us who stay home because we don’t think there’ll be many other people in gear, the worse the bar scene will become. Everyone ends up saving themselves for ‘special events,’ whether it’s a BLUF party, one of Recon’s Full Fetish events, or something else.

We need people, as MenInGear says, to get geared up and go out.
Support your bars in 2012

In the current economic climate, everyone’s having a tough time, and that of includes many gay bars; some of the most well known, like the Eagle Tavern in San Francisco, have closed, while others have relaxed their dress codes to try and get more people through the door.

Great though big parties can be, there aren’t many bars that can survive on just a few party nights a year, especially when commercial promoters take their cut. They need our support to stay open – otherwise we’ll come out of the recession, to a chorus of people asking “Where are all the leather bars?”

It’s not just the bars that are having a bad time too, of course. Many of us are feeling the pinch; but even so, at this time of year, when many people are thinking about resolutions for the New Year, I’d like to ask people to make a simple pledge, summed up in the graphic below.

We’ve called it the 12×12 pledge, and it’s simple. We don’t want you to prop up the bar every night. Or to make a point of going out every weekend. But we would like to you step away from the PC, and get out in your gear.

We want as many leather and fetish guys as possible to try to make sure that in 2012, they visit their local leather bars, at least twelve times. If enough of us do, perhaps we can make a difference, and make sure that the leather bars we do have aren’t just places for special events from time to time, but somewhere we can meet like minded people, whenever we do feel like going out.

So, please, if you think you can make this one of your resolutions, please add a comment below, and feel free to share this post with other people around the world and around the net.

CineKink: Chicago (November 18-19)

Founded in 2003, CineKink recognizes and encourages the positive depiction of sexuality and kink in film and television, most visibly through its annual film festival, CineKink NYC.

Featuring a specially-selected program of films and videos that celebrate and explore the wide diversity of sexuality, with offerings drawn from both Hollywood and beyond, works presented by CineKink range from documentary to drama, camp comedy to hot porn, mildly spicy to quite explicit — and everything in between.

In addition to screenings, the annual festival also includes a short film competition, audience choice awards, presentations, parties and a gala kick-off fundraiser, all followed by a national screening tour.

CineKink comes to Chicago November 18-19.

Chicago Rubbermen Party this Saturday

It’s about damn time for another rubber event! Join us on Saturday, August 27 at Touche. Located on the city’s northside at 6412 North Clark Street, Chicago (map), it’s got cheap drinks, a big back room, and easy parking. And when we go, we pack the place with rubber. and THIS month, we’re also looking for new ideas for 2012. Every year, we like to host a casual meeting before the party starts for people to bring ideas, offer suggestions for bar venues, special outings, and other outreach ideas. Got a bar night or rubber field trip idea? Or maybe you know of an organization we should know about? Every year we grow and learn a little bit more how to get the word out, raise awareness about rubber, and have fun.  Meeting begins at 10pm. Rubber social fun time starts at 10:30pm. And who knows, maybe a match of lube wrestling will break out… You never know – but we will see you there!

“Out in Chicago” Exhibitions

“Out In Chicago”

Opens Saturday, May 21, 2011

Discover 150 years of urban history through the lens of gender, sexuality, and nonconformity. This exhibition uses four themes—individuals and their bodies, family and home, communities, and political action—to present the city’s diverse LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) history. Out in Chicago is part of a continuing series about the city’s communities.

Northern Trust is the lead corporate sponsor for the Out in Chicago exhibition. Generous support for the entire Out at CHM project is provided by The Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust. Additional support is provided by The Chicago Community Trust, Pauls Foundation, Sara Lee Foundation, UBS, Polk Bros. Foundation, and The Goodworks Fund.

I’m promoting this event because this exhibition also explores the Kink Side of Chicago including IML.   And, also because our puppet friend below, “Spike”,  gets interviewed at one point during the film.

Chicago Puppy Patrol

The Chicago Puppy Patrol is a community based social group for pups, trainers, handlers, and those interested in exploring puppy play. CPP is committed to providing a safe and secure environment in which handlers, pups and friends can come together to play, learn and grow. Pride Fatigue

I know this is from June 2010’s Chicago Pride time but this is a great interview with Chicago personality “Cyon Flare” on diversity and encouraging all to have pride.

C: What is your response to those that can’t seem to shake that feeling of parade fatigue?
CF: I think that we’ll always have many age groups that suffer from pride parade fatigue, at some point in their lives. The key is to enjoy what you can [about Gay Pride celebrations], what you feel comfortable with, and to remain visible to the community. We need you 40-somethings; too many are tired, and I understand that, but the power of your presence makes a difference. Rise up, children rise!

2 Chicago Rubbermen Parties this Month!

Greetings Chicago Rubbermen:

Mr. International Rubber (MIR) is quickly approaching and we’re eager to get geared up and spread the word!  Join us at THE HOLE at Jackhammer Saturday 23rd at 11pm for some drinks, socializing, and good old fashioned shiny fun!  No agenda, no raffle–just FUN. The Chicago Rubbermen are hosting the MIR Gear Sale again this year.  Anyone who is interested in getting cash for their old gear can talk to Timmy at The Hole that night.  This is not to be confused with Timmy’s hole…

Also, one of our beloved club members, Rubberkai, will not be able to join us at MIR (boo) due to a new job (yay)!  Join us and support him at SIDETRACK for Rubber Showtunes at 7pm on Sunday the 24th!  Because alcoholic slushies, rubber and Glee music were MADE for each other…

We look forward to seeing you at one or both of these great events! Spread the word – bring a friend or two or more!

Stay rubbered up,
