RUFF THOUGHTS: “Loosing a Mentor”

Just found out about a friend that passed away about a year ago. A Mentor from Denver we met on MSN chat like… 13 yrs ago… who held our hands (pulling them really) as we stepped out of that conservative Ohio “closet” and went to our first Gay Event in San Francisco.

I remember him saying “You guys can hold hands out on the streets here” which made me feel so liberated and start to feel comfortable in my own skin. He took us to “The Loading Dock” in San Francisco and also to Folsom Street Fair where I wore incredibly loose leather chaps, white jock strap and a harness… with a colorful sunburn as a souvenir.

It took years of events like this to finally feel like I didn’t need to hide like I did back in Toledo, Ohio.

He was one of those people that showed me how important it is to be supportive, understanding and patient to those just coming out. It is NOT easy for everyone even with progress in society.

Bob and I hadn’t talked in years but I did get a chance to thank him at one point a while back.  For that, I’m beyond grateful and hope anyone who reads this takes the time, today, to thank those who have been there for them the same way.

Love you, Bob….

San Francisco Eagle to RE-OPEN!!!

S.F. Eagle

From the San Francisco Eagle Website

It will take a couple of months to do the much-needed repairs and upgrades that the property requires, but some upcoming events are already in the works prior to the opening of the bar. Please check this website periodically for new announcements coming soon.

The bar and patio located at 398 12th Street has long been a special place, not only to the LGBT community, but to the entire community for decades, not to mention the live music community as well. We just couldn’t let such a historic place like this disappear!

We will continue to host fundraisers for all the organizations from the past, as well as welcoming new ones to make the S.F. Eagle the pride of our community once again. We look forward to seeing all of you very soon!

My Thoughts on the Re-Opening of the San Francisco Eagle

It’s easily said that this Bar has a great deal of personal history for many, many, many Gay Leather Men (and Women).   I first went there went I was 23 with my Husband. 23!

Many memories in my head when I think of the place:

– Seeing what I then described as “Tom of Finland Bookends” (Larry and Paul). WOOF!  My was on the FLOOR.

– Seeing my new friend we met online, Bob, handcuffed to his future husband cock.

– Long talk about life, LTRs and other events with my “Uncle George”.

– Simple things like… holding my Husband’s hand in public… and wearing a collar.

-And, of course… then the Kinky Stuff I did there (use your imagination).

Looking back more, the one thing that stands out in my mind the most was that the San Francisco Eagle was only the 2nd Gay Bar I ever went to, the other being the now closed Detroit Eagle (so sad).   The city in Ohio we were living in at the time didn’t have much of a Gay Scene.  We’d go weeks (sometimes months) without seeing other Gay Men. We were closeted at the time so you can imagine what it was like for 2 Novice Gay Men (in cheap leathers that didn’t fit well) to stand there in the Eagle’s patio during the beer bust and see so many people that were much more comfortable in their skin (and Fetish Gear) than we were.    I remember leaving San Francisco overwhelmed, very happy and inspired by the San Francisco Eagle that I could be who I wanted to be.

Without a doubt, there’s other gays just coming out that will nervously visit their own first gay bar this summer. Maybe in San Francisco. It really, really makes me happy to know that an establishment that had such an impact on our lives will return offering a place for Novices to be inspired much like we were.

Best of luck to Mike and Alex.   And… THANK YOU.

Heads Up Folsom Street Fair attendees…

Photobucket
Well, this sort of sucks.
Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco was recently announced to have a different date than it’s usual end of September.  The new date is…
Sunday, Sept 23rd.

“Normally, the Folsom Street Fair is held on the last weekend in September. However, in 2012, that weekend is the same as Oracle Open World. We have received word from our partners in the hotel industry that many of the city’s hotels are already completely sold out for that weekend”.

I hope the date change doesn’t affect attendance overall.  It’s certainly not the organizer’s fault.

Go to 12 Leather Bars in Gear in 2012

Editor’s note: We’re HUGE fanatics about getting people out of the house and in to their gear. There’s a lot of movement out there to re-claim our kinky gear spaces and the men from BLUF (Breeches and Leather Uniform Fanclub) are at the very forefront of that movement. Check out this post from the BLUF webmaster Nigel Whitfield. More info on the BLUF website.

There’s even a FACEBOOK PAGE.

One of the most important things that BLUF does every year is to organise meetings around the world; these are arranged by volunteers, and take place in the UK, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, the United States, and many other countries.

At many of these, attendance is excellent – at The Backstreet in London, for example, we’ll regularly see the bar filled almost to capacity, and the same is true at many other events, including of course those organised by other groups around the world, like Folsom Europe.

One of the things that many people often say is that they wish the bars were so busy more often; there are plenty of people that, for instance, we’ll only see at The Backstreet the four or five times a year that there’s a BLUF party.

A decade ago, that wasn’t the case – there would be a good turnout most weekends, and plenty of people making the effort to get out in their gear. Now, of course, plenty of people stay at home, thanks to smoking bans, the cost of drinking in bars, and the ease of making contact online. Just one more click, it sometimes feels, and we’ll find Mr Right, or Mr Right Now.

Today, lots of people say that they’d make the effort, but they don’t want to be the only ones in a bar in full leather; and, to an extent, that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy. The more of us who stay home because we don’t think there’ll be many other people in gear, the worse the bar scene will become. Everyone ends up saving themselves for ‘special events,’ whether it’s a BLUF party, one of Recon’s Full Fetish events, or something else.

We need people, as MenInGear says, to get geared up and go out.
Support your bars in 2012

In the current economic climate, everyone’s having a tough time, and that of includes many gay bars; some of the most well known, like the Eagle Tavern in San Francisco, have closed, while others have relaxed their dress codes to try and get more people through the door.

Great though big parties can be, there aren’t many bars that can survive on just a few party nights a year, especially when commercial promoters take their cut. They need our support to stay open – otherwise we’ll come out of the recession, to a chorus of people asking “Where are all the leather bars?”

It’s not just the bars that are having a bad time too, of course. Many of us are feeling the pinch; but even so, at this time of year, when many people are thinking about resolutions for the New Year, I’d like to ask people to make a simple pledge, summed up in the graphic below.

We’ve called it the 12×12 pledge, and it’s simple. We don’t want you to prop up the bar every night. Or to make a point of going out every weekend. But we would like to you step away from the PC, and get out in your gear.

We want as many leather and fetish guys as possible to try to make sure that in 2012, they visit their local leather bars, at least twelve times. If enough of us do, perhaps we can make a difference, and make sure that the leather bars we do have aren’t just places for special events from time to time, but somewhere we can meet like minded people, whenever we do feel like going out.

So, please, if you think you can make this one of your resolutions, please add a comment below, and feel free to share this post with other people around the world and around the net.
